Declaration
for an Original Invalid Pension
State of Arkansas, County of Carroll, SS.
“On this – day of – A.D. one thousand eight hundred and eighty – personally
appeared before me –
of the – a Court of Record within and for
the county and State aforesaid Abijah Stewart aged
39 years, who, being duly sworn according to law,
declares that he is the identical Abijah Stewart
who was ENROLLED on the 1st day of April, 1864,
in company E of the 1st regiment of E. Tenn. Lt.
Arty. Commanded by Capt. W. J. Patterson and was
honorably DISCHARGED at Nashville Tenn. on the
First day of August, 1865; That his personal description
is as follows: Age 39 years; height 5 feet 7 inches;
complexion Dark; hair, Dark; eyes Dark. That while
a member of the organization aforesaid, in the
service and in the line of his duty at or near
Marstown in the State of Tennessee on or about
the 1st day of December, 1864, he was taken prisoner
and taken to the Danville Prison at Dansville Va.
where he contracted pleurisy and piles, which have
resulted in general disability.
He also affirms he was exchanged about April 1st
1865 and immediately thereafter he entered the
hospital at Grafton, Va. where he remained about
fourteen days, then went home on furlough, at expiration
of which he reported to his Company at Greenville,
Tenn, but surgeon in Camp refused to receive him
as fit for duty. The name of this surgeon he does
not remember: he then returned home where he remained
until his company was ordered to Nashville, Tenn.
to be mustered out on August 7th 1865. Was treated
by one Dr. Clarke in Greene Co, Mo in spring & summer
of 1866 and by a Dr. Sweeney of Ash Grove, Mo.
spring & summer of 1875.
That he was treated in hospitals as follows: Ash
Grove, Mo. spring & summer of 1875.
That he has not been employed in the military or
naval service otherwise that as stated above.
That he has not been in the military or naval service
of the United States since the 7th day of August
1865
That since leaving the service this applicant has
resided in the – of – in the State
of --, and that his occupation has been that of
a various light works.
That prior to his entry the service above named
he was a man of good, sound, physical health, being
when enrolled a Farmer. That he is now totally
disabled from obtaining his subsistance by manual
labor by reason of his injuries, above described,
received in the service of the United States; and
he therefore makes this declaration for the purpose
of being placed on the invalid pension roll of
the United States. He hereby appoints with full
power of substitution and revocation. Irenius D.
Stewart of Eureka Springs, Carroll Co., Ark his
true and lawful attorney, to prosecute his claim.
That he has not received nor applied for a pension;
that his residence is No. –
street Eureka Springs, Carroll Co., Ark and that
his post office address is Eureka Springs, Carroll
Co., Arkansas. “
